Game Development in Python

6 projects in Media. Most starred: pygame, renpy and panda3d.

pygame is the classic choice for 2D games in Python, built on SDL, with a long history of tutorials and examples. pygame-ce is a community edition fork that is developed more actively and works as a drop-in replacement (you still import pygame), so new projects often start with it. Arcade is a modern 2D library built on OpenGL with a cleaner object-oriented API, sprites and physics helpers. pyglet handles windowing, OpenGL graphics, audio and input with no external dependencies.

Panda3D is a complete 3D engine originally developed by Disney, with a scene graph, physics and asset pipeline, usable entirely from Python. Ren'Py is a dedicated engine for visual novels with its own script language on top of Python, and it handles saving, menus and packaging for you. Python games are usually distributed as executables built with tools in the Distribution section.
